A THRIVING CAREER
As a Reserve Officer Training Corps graduate, he entered the Army upon graduation as a Second Lieutenant. He attended the Signal Corps Basic Course, the Tactical Signal Officers Course, Ranger School, and Airborne School. Through the years, he was stationed at Ft Riley, Kansas, Ft Gordon, Georgia, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Ft Sill, Oklahoma, Ft, Carson, Colorado, Keesler AFB, Mississippi, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, Panama, Germany, and Vietnam. While at Keesler, Steve received his Master's Degree in Telecommunications Management in August 1980.
Steve retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1992 at Ft Huachuca, Arizona, and has been a resident of Sierra Vista, Arizona since 1989. From 1989 to 1992, Steve rode with B-Troop, 4th Cavalry, the Memorial Unit at Ft Huachuca. During that time, they performed all over Arizona and New Mexico and went to the Rose Bowl Parade all three years.
From 1992 to 2010, Steve worked for three different government contractors, Logicon (Northrop Grumman), Ilex (L-3 Communications) and Command and Control Support Services (C2S2.) He also worked part-time for several years with Sierra Collections and Consulting Agency in Sierra Vista.
Since their arrival in town, both Steve and his Margie have been involved in many community activities. Margie is involved with St Vincent de Paul, both as a member of their board and as a service provider, Steve as a worker bee. Both are involved in the St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Choir, Marriage Preparation, and Christian Education, and they are both are active members of the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista for over 25 years.
While riding with B-Troop, Steve met Brigadier General (Ret) Roy “Bud” Strom who asked him to join the Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering team as the Artist Liaison Committee Chair. Steve began working with the John Shaver and Bud Strom in 1995 and has been with them ever since. When John Shaver and Bud Strom retired as Co-Chairs after the 2003 Gathering, Steve became one of the Co-Chairs and has been a Co-Chair ever since. After the 2014 Gathering, Steve turned the Gathering’s reins over to two new co-chairs. He is still involved as a member of the Executive Board and as the Advertising Committee Chair. The Gathering is very proud to have sponsored a cowboy poetry writing program for the local schools for 26 years and introduced western poetry, Arizona history, and ranching to thousands of students. Throughout the years, Steve made presentations in the schools on writing poetry. He also writes and performs poetry and sings western songs.
Steve served on the Arizona Foster Care Review Board for seven years, and on the Sierra Vista Symphony Board for eight years. He also supported the symphony with their fund-raiser, “Men Who Cook.”
Steve is proud to be part of such a wonderful, caring and giving community -- honored by this continued opportunity to served it.
